Mary Hickey

Parent Coaching Consultant

Mary Hickey is our Parent Coaching Consultant. She helps parents of new college students be better parents. As a Certified Parent Coach with more than 20 years of experience working in therapeutic and transitional programs for adolescents, young adults, and families, she knows that a student’s transition to independence can be challenging for the whole family. But by helping parents recognize what is within their control, she guides them to make more meaningful and useful decisions and use their energy where it matters most. Clarifying the parent experience in this way improves engagement, outcomes, and ultimately student success.

“I often say that parents know their kids better than anyone and are a vital part of a successful transition. Knowing when to “lean in” and when to step back is challenging. In coaching, we can explore how parents can support a healthy transition, stay connected and encourage autonomy.”

Her professional experience includes positions as a Wilderness Field Instructor, Admissions Director, Assistant Head of School, and Executive Director. She has served as the Director of Family Services and Outreach, facilitating parent workshops, and supporting families through difficult transitions. She has a professional certificate in Learning Differences and Neurodiversity, with a specialization in Executive Functioning. She also has advanced training in Mindfulness Meditation and Transcendental Meditation.

Mary holds a master’s degree from Northern Arizona University in Counseling and Human Relations and earned her bachelor’s degree from Prescott College in Adventure Education, with an emphasis in therapeutic use of the wilderness. Mary also has advanced training in addiction, meditation, family systems and executive functioning support.
